April Anue is a quilt maker whose work often embodies spiritual and historical significance.  The “Quilted Women” who are the subject of the exhibit (October 2-November 1, 2014) at Detroit Fiber Works, are primarily African-American icons of music, including Bessie Smith, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Etta James, to name a few.  Each piece is painstakingly appliquéd by Ms. Anue, using boldly colorful fabrics.

In addition to “Quilted Women”, also on display is Ms. Anue’s breathtaking work of art, “Strange Fruit”.  This massive ten-foot by ten-foot work of fiber art lists, in embroidery, the names of people who were lynched in the United States from 1865 through 1965.  This work evokes strong emotional responses and sobering conversations.
