About AKOMA
AKOMA is a dedicated space for Detroit’s BIPOC artists and makers, with a vision to foster a community where we connect, learn, and support one another in cultivating our artistic practices while positively impacting the broader community.
At AKOMA, we prioritize creativity, community, and sustainability. Our Dye Garden, open to all, functions as both an educational space and a peaceful retreat for reflection and growth.
Our logo features the heart-shaped AKOMA Adinkra symbol, representing values such as love, unity, endurance, patience, goodwill, tolerance, faithfulness, and understanding.
Our Mission
AKOMA Art House & Dye Garden's mission is to uplift and empower Detroit’s BIPOC artist community by providing affordable opportunities for artists to showcase and sell their work. In addition, we are committed to creating a space for rest, relaxation, reflection, restoration, and revolution. The Dye Garden, in particular, will be a sanctuary where both artists and community members can come together to learn natural dyeing and fiber art techniques, honoring the gifts of the earth while fostering creativity and connection.
Our Vision
Our vision is to create a thriving, self-sustaining artistic ecosystem in Detroit where BIPOC artists are empowered to grow their creative practices, connect deeply with the community, and inspire social change. We envision AKOMA Art House & Dye Garden as a model for holistic, inclusive spaces that blend art, education, and environmental stewardship, providing a nurturing environment for creativity, collaboration, and cultural healing.
